Special Spreads

Since the 2018 Yearbook has a chronological structure, the editorial board decided that we wanted to have a few “special spreads” for big events, such as Homecoming, Winter Break, Prom, etc. I also thought it would be a nice tie-in to use the same format for the opening and closing spreads. Below are the opening spreads for this year. The bold, yellow title was an inspiration pulled from the end sheets, which have a block of yellow words describing the year on them.

Opening Spread 2

One of the “special spreads” is a season recap spread for each sports season. Since the spread will fall at the end of each season, but it’s not a chronological page, I wanted the spread to stand out as something different. I used the same general format that is used for the chronological spreads but I incorporated a few other design aspects to differentiate this spread from others.

I designed the endsheets for the 2018 Yearbook and I wanted to introduce the theme as soon as you opened the cover. I tied in the yellow from the cover as well as words that the staff brainstormed while we were discussing our theme.

Groups and Reference

I was the Groups and Reference Editor during the 2016-2017 school year. I was given the assignment with no real instruction on how to design these pages and I had to figure out what I was doing as I went along. This turned into a growing experience and I became a lot more comfortable with InDesign by the end of the year. The templates that I made (below) were used for the 2017-2018 book as well.

For the sports pages, I really wanted to add more information than just the player’s names as they appeared in the photo. Adding the schedule, along with the points and who won the game, was a good way to recap the season without having to write a short story to go along with the photo.

For the Clubs and Groups pages, I also had the same goal to add more information besides the names of the participants. Adding the about section also added an educational aspect since many people don’t know which clubs exist or what the club is about.

Modules

I designed a few modules for an InDesign library for the yearbook staff to use. My adviser and I decided that it would be easier to have an assortment of modules that could be dragged onto the spread so that designing the spread was easier. These modules are designed to be alternative coverage tools to allow for unique storytelling.

I designed the following modules so that the stories could be portrayed in a different and more interesting way.
