Coverage

For the 2017-2018 Yearbook, the staff decided that we wanted to focus on coverage for this book. We formulated a goal to get each student into the book three times including their student portrait. Since this was a lofty goal, I realized that we had to do something to make sure that we filled the pages with as many students as possible. I came up with the idea of a consistent space on each spread for a sidebar.

Sidebar

Each sidebar has consistent questions and 10 students on each sidebar. For the first semester of the year, the three questions that we used were I’ll never forget the time, my proudest achievement was when and you may be surprised to know. I picked these questions from all of the questions that we brainstormed as a staff because I felt like these questions would be the best ways to get students to answer in a meaningful and memorable way. The sidebar became our way to try and include the students that don’t participate in regular school activities that are easily covered throughout the book. I chose to place the sidebar on the right side of the spread on each template that we use because I wanted it to stay consistent while all of the other module sizes and placements change.

Social Media

Snapchat

I knew that the majority of the school used snapchat since it’s a popular app for communication right now. Since it’s easily accessible and in constant use, I thought snapchat would be a good platform for communication from the yearbook staff to the student population.

I’ve asked the business manager and the groups reference editor to use snapchat to remind the students of deadlines for turning in payments, updates on club picture day and reminders for the last day to turn in senior picture submissions on snapchat.

Another way that I have tried to integrate snapchat into our production process is through polls. We post polls on our snapchat story and use the answers for statistics for modules. A few of our by-the-numbers type modules have been created using the results of the snapchat polls.

I proposed to my advisor that we should incorporate social media into our program in a more meaningful way. At the 2017 National Journalism Convention in Seattle, WA one of the yearbook staff members expressed interest in integrating social media as well. I made him the social media editor on the staff during the 2017-2018 school year in order to start consistently using social media in our program.

Design Layout

As a continuation of our coverage goal, I designed 5 templates that all had the same amount of module spaces, including the sidebar. I did this because I wanted the book to be uniform while changing the layout a little bit in order to keep things interesting. In the spaces allotted in each module space, I have required from the staff members to include five different kinds of stories. There should be an academic, sport, club, current student life and timeless student life stories on each spread. All of the stories should be related directly to the chronological week that the group was assigned except for the timeless student life story. I have decided to require the five different stories in order to get as many people in the spread as possible and to have multiple groups of people present on each spread.
